Anthropic Gives Claude the Ability to Control Your Computer Remotely

Anthropic has introduced a new feature that allows its AI assistant, Claude, to directly control a user’s computer. The update is currently available as a research preview on the Claude macOS app.

With this feature, Claude can carry out actions like clicking, typing, opening apps, and browsing websites on behalf of the user. Instead of just giving instructions, the AI can now execute tasks in real time on a Mac device.

From assistant to operator

Before now, most AI tools were limited to answering questions or generating content. With this update, we’re seeing a shift.

Claude can now interact with the computer interface the same way a human would, moving the cursor, navigating menus, and filling out forms.

This means we can give it a task and let it handle multiple steps without constant supervision.

You can use it even when you’re away

One of the biggest changes is remote access.

We can send tasks to Claude from our phones, and it will carry them out on a connected Mac computer. This works through Anthropic’s cross-device features, allowing the desktop app to stay active while we are not physically present.

In simple terms, you could be outside and still get work done on your system at home or in the office.

Still in early stage

Anthropic says this feature is still in a research preview, which means it is not perfect yet.

For now:

  • It’s limited to macOS devices

  • It’s mainly available to paid users (Pro and Max plans)

  • Some complex tasks may fail or need to be repeated

The company also noted that users must give permission before Claude takes control of their system, which is important for safety and privacy.

What this means for us in Nigeria

For many of us working remotely, running online businesses, or handling multiple digital tasks, this kind of tool could save time.

You can use it to:

  • Fill forms automatically

  • Manage simple online tasks while you are on the move

  • Run workflows without sitting in front of your laptop

But there are also real issues about:

  • Data privacy

  • Internet reliability

  • Cost of access to premium AI tools

So the idea is powerful, but adoption in Nigeria may depend on how affordable and stable it becomes.

This update shows where AI is heading. We are moving from tools that only respond to tools that can actually do the work.

If this improves over time, AI assistants like Claude may start acting more like digital workers than just chat tools.
